Mini Doc and Album Launch

Civil Disobedience
David Ambrosio
Civil Disobedience reimagines an album launch through a documentary that explores the intersection of music, social consciousness, and historical memory. Centered around David Ambrosio's reinterpretation of protest-era jazz compositions, the film examines how art can preserve the past, challenge the present, and inspire conversations about the future.
Civil Disobedience
Overview
Not every album release needs another performance video. When bassist and composer David Ambrosio approached us about documenting Civil Disobedience, it became clear that the music was connected to something much larger than the recording itself. The project revisits compositions born from the social movements, protests, and cultural upheaval of the 1960s, asking what these works mean in today's world. Rather than focusing solely on how the music was made, we focused on why it matters.

The result was a documentary-driven campaign centered around a 20-minute mini-documentary that explores the relationship between jazz, protest, community, and social consciousness through the voices of the musicians bringing this music back to life.

Civil Disobedience
The Challenge

How do you promote an album whose purpose extends beyond the music itself? Civil Disobedience is rooted in compositions written during a period of immense political and social change. The music reflects movements for civil rights, economic equality, and collective action—topics that remain relevant decades later.

Traditional album marketing often centers on recording sessions, performance footage, or artist interviews. But this project called for something different. The challenge wasn't simply introducing listeners to new music. It was helping audiences understand the historical context, emotional weight, and contemporary relevance behind it.

The Solution
At Missing Frequencies, we believe every project deserves the format that best serves its story. For Civil Disobedience, that meant moving beyond a standard album rollout and building a narrative experience that connected the music to the human stories surrounding it. Through interviews with David Ambrosio and members of the ensemble, archival footage, historical references, and live performance moments, we crafted a documentary that explored themes of protest, resistance, community, and artistic expression. Throughout the film, musicians reflect on the ways music becomes a reflection of its time—how art carries urgency, preserves memory, and gives people a language for what they believe in.

As Victor Lewis notes in the film, "Art has always reflected the times." The goal was not simply to explain the album, but to create a deeper entry point into its meaning.

Performance Results
The documentary became a central piece of the album's launch, helping audiences engage with the project on a level beyond the music itself. The conversation surrounding Civil Disobedience echoed many of the themes explored in the film. Reviewers described the album as: "Both a tribute and a reclamation." — Mark Corroto, All About Jazz "With Civil Disobedience, Ambrosio is back in the deep end of musical dedication—to his ideals and to a historical and social consciousness." — Josef Woodard, DownBeat

Final thoughts
Our mission isn't simply to create content. It's to uncover the human story at the center of a project and build the right creative assets around it. For some artists, that's a performance film. For others, it's a social campaign, a live experience, or a collection of short-form content. For Civil Disobedience, the most powerful asset wasn't another music video. It was a documentary that explored how music can carry history, challenge ideas, preserve memory, and bring people together. Because sometimes the story isn't just the album. It's what the album has to say.
